Increase

[T]he House and Senate Appropriations Committees released a four bill FY26
?minibus? appropriations bill that contains final compromise funding levels
for the Departments of Defense Labor, HHS, and Education. The great news is
that the World Language Advancement and Readiness Grants program at the
Department of Defense was not only preserved but received a 50% increase.
Additionally, key K-12 programs that the Trump Administration proposed for
elimination ? including Title II-A (professional development), Title III
(English language acquisition), Title IV-A (flexible block grant), Native
Hawaiian Education and Alaska Native Education ? were retained and all
would receive level funding over last year. In higher education, Title
VI/Fulbright-Hays, which the Administration had also sought to defund, was
preserved but did sustain a $5 million cut. The Native American Language
Resource Center received a small increase. The House and Senate are
expected to move this package before January 30th, when the current
Translators are losing jobs to AI that produces "consistently mediocre
results"

Analysis suggests a 70% chance of automation for interpreters and
translators. Rates for AI post-editing have cratered to 50-70% of what
human translation used to pay ? typically $0.05-$0.15 per word compared to
$0.15-$0.30 for human work. Many translators describe a dramatic disruption
in wages and working conditions since OpenAI's rise.
ICE Shootings Are Freaking Out the GOP. They?re Afraid to Tell Trump.

Because of the unflinching personal loyalty he demands, and punishment
he?ll administer on public dissenters, leading GOP officials speak in
rhetorical code... This all begs the question of why, if the president is
so responsive to the press narrative, more in his party don?t speak out in
ways that will shape the story. They are, but you have to know how to
decipher their language.

Mott Poll Report

The curse of children swearing

Children learn new words and expressions from a variety of sources. This
can include swear words, which may surprise or concern parents. The C.S.
Mott Children?s Hospital National Poll on Children?s Health asked a
national sample of parents of children 6-17 years about their attitudes and
experiences around children swearing.

In describing their own view of children using swear words, 47% of parents
think it is never okay, 35% feel it depends on the situation, 12% think it
depends on the word, and 6% say swear words are no big deal. Parents of
teens (13-17 years) are more likely to say it depends on the situation,
while parents of younger children (6-12 years) are more likely to say
swearing is never okay.

Most parents say their child never (44%) or rarely (32%) swears; however,
24% say their child swears occasionally or frequently. Parents are more
likely to report swearing at least occasionally for teens (37%) vs. younger
children (14%).

Parents report different reasons for children swearing: out of habit (41%),
to fit in with other kids (37%), to be funny (36%), or to get attention
(21%), or because ?it?s just the way kids talk these days? (27%). Parents
attribute teen swearing to their teen trying to fit in, and swearing among
younger children as their child trying to be funny or get attention.
Summary:
Volume 1 critically rethinks protest as a central sociolinguistic practice
rather than an exception to an imagined social order. Drawing on
transdisciplinary and various case studies ? from the Arab revolutions to
Hong Kong?s Lennon Walls and South Africa?s student uprisings ? this volume
explores how language, embodiment, and space intersect in acts of
resistance. It is the first of a two-volume set that reshapes the field?s
understanding of language in times of crisis and uprising.

In Volume 2, scholars explore the complex intersections between protest,
language, and decolonial thought. It challenges dominant linguistic
ideologies by uncovering how language is wielded, contested, and reimagined
in protests against racial, gendered, and colonial violence. From Black
feminist activism in the U.S. to anti-mining movements in South Africa and
pandemic protests in Chile, the chapters examine how diverse (embodied)
linguistic practices resist dominant power structures and give voice to
marginalized communities.

Dear colleague,

I am writing to seek your engagement on an extremely important federal
policy issue. As you may have seen, the U.S. Department of Education is
working on regulations to implement the budget reconciliation bill passed
last July (the "One Big Beautiful Bill" or OB3). These regulations exclude
education students from the "professional student? category.

This exclusion has profound symbolic and practical implications for our
profession, students, and programs. It sends the horrible message that the
federal government does not consider educators to be professionals. And,
crucially, it cuts off our students from needed access to federal student
loans, threatening their ability to enroll or remain in our
post-baccalaureate programs.

The Department of Education has published the Proposed Rule
<https://www.google.com/url?q=http://send.aacte.org/link.cfm?r%3DzEfflfjnjuB69XbHQOf8zA~~%26pe%3DxOc8pwRe-rG3mRjRhZdrgmIcxHooGHWPQBaTSZRkPpXjM0B8QAA69U3yaYNKjft9uJ2xNSAdsYSxmnwBV1JBqg~~%26t%3DavC0PYhxrYBjV-yii4r19w~~&source=gmail-imap&ust=1770672918000000&usg=AOvVaw1HgFM9BoGXiJ5G0JohPp1l>
containing this restrictive definition of professional students and is
inviting public comment by March 2, 2026. We must flood the Department with
comments explaining the impact of this policy and seeking inclusion of all
post-baccalaureate education students in the professional student category.
I ask you to take the following actions to help ensure that your students
have access to the financial aid they need:
