Could the list be set up so that only text messages would be
allowed, and attachments would be discarded automatically?
In that way, no virus could reach mail subscribers.

I personally think distribution lists are mostly for text,
so if someone wants others to have a formatted document,
graphic file, etc., he or she can upload it to a web site
and inform the list about it.
