The Committee on Human Development invites
applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in
the area of language and human development. The Committee
is an interdisciplinary graduate program in the Division of
the Social Sciences specializing in the biosocial and
psychocultural study of human development over the
life span. We seek a broadly trained scholar interested in
the role of language in development within social and
cultural context. Particular specialization is less
important than a demonstrated capacity for innovative
research and substantive multidisciplinary dialogue.
Relevant specializations might include, but are not limited
to, language as a mediator of socialization,
multilingualism, development of narrative or discursive
skills, first and/or second language acquisition
(in comparative perspective), language and the constitution
of self (including cognitive and affective dimensions), and
the psychological aspects of the specialized language in
institutional settings (e.g., clinic, classroom, etc.).
Review of applications will begin December 1, 2001, and will
continue until the position is filled. Please submit a
letter of application, vita, a list of referees, and any
relevant papers to Chair, Language Search, Committee on
Human Development, The University of Chicago, 5730 S.
Woodlawn Ave., Chicago, IL 60637. EOE/AAE
