Computers in the Field

I have a question about recording devices. I am very low-tech and have been
using a Sony Pro-Walkman to tape interviews and conversations. However,
even after being repaired, my tape recorder has electrical problems and a
chronic tendency to produce tapes recorded at too high speeds to be usable
upon playback. I don't want to make a huge investment and I don't need
particularly precise sound quality -- just something that will make tapes
from which I can transcribe whole words in languages that aren't native to
me. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
