Crystal's book sounds interesting. If not for its content, at least for the
author's attitude towards Internet language. Let's hope it convinces some
language snobs...And for one thing, chat rooms do provide an interesting
case of spontaneous written language, IMVH(AWISHIMVVVH)O. Maybe we should
adapt this case to (recurring) discussions over "oral vs. written"
language. Say, contrasting memorized oral texts with these spontaneous
written dialogues...

Surprising that Crystal's should be claimed to be the first book on the
subject, though.
Out of curiosity, are there LingAnthers working on Internet speech?
