I didn't mean to claim that it was DT's invention.
However, it is I think often missed -- perhaps more often by receivers
of the information, rather than authors on the topic -- and most
notably by a large majority of the students that I assign Brown and
Gilman 1960 to, year after year. The 2-dimensional diagram in Tannen's
article makes it that much harder to miss. I have used this for years
now as my basic example of what independence of social dimensions
*means*, so that they pretty much HAVE to get their heads around it...
