Suzette Haden Elgin, who has a PhD in linguistics and at least a tad of
attitude, has written several how-to books about language and at least two
novels about women with a secret language. I read the books a long time ago;
I remember at least the first as being pretty good.

The titles:

Native tongue: who speaks for the starts.

And

The Judas Rose (a sequel to Native tongue).

PEACE AND JUSTICE!
