I'd like to point out that the most lucid explanation of phonemes was  
published in the magazine _Amazing Science Fiction_ by CF Hockett. My  
point is the opposite of the original inquiry- whether linguistics  
helps one write good literature. I think Hockett's engagement with  
literature produced some good linguistics (teaching).
