The successful candidate could be housed in our department (Anthropology) if
the PhD were in Anthropology or Linguistics. Details below. Happy to answer

Arab Studies.  Assistant Professor:  The College of Arts and Sciences at
American University (Washington, D.C.) invites applications for a tenure
track appointment in Arab Studies beginning in Fall 2011 at the rank of
Assistant Professor.  Desired areas of specialization include Arab
societies, culture, and/or history to complement (not duplicate) existing
strengths at American University in the politics and international relations
of the Arab world.  The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate
that she or he has an active research program focused on the Arab world and
can provide leadership to the Arab Studies Program.  The appointee’s duties
will include teaching four courses per academic year (including one or more
core courses in the Arab Studies Program) and working to expand the
program’s curricular offerings in the College of Arts and Sciences.  The
appointee’s tenure home and departmental affiliation in the college will
depend on her or his disciplinary background. Applications received by
October 10, 2010 will receive best consideration; preliminary interviews
will be held at the Middle East Studies Association meetings in November,
