Dear colleagues,

I am preparing to edit a volume for the Oxford Studies in
Sociolinguistics series. The book, tentatively titled “The Language
of War and Peace,” will forward current and new perspectives on
language use underlying the outbreak, conduct and resolution of
military conflict around the world. The book seeks to bring together
critically informed perspectives that address these issues using
discourse analysis and/or ethnographic methods.

Perspectives from around the world, especially including Africa, the
Middle East, and Asia—as well as anthropologically based studies of
the language of war and peace in traditional societies—are desired.

Topics or themes may include (but are not limited to) the rhetoric
used to justify and gain support for war, the language of diplomacy
used to avert or end war, debates over extraordinary rendition and
torture, discourses about nuclear non-proliferation, the language of
countering war (e.g. anti-war protests and the peace movement), the
wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (particularly from the perspective of
participants in the Middle East), the role of the media in circulating
discourses about war and peace, issues of ‘truth’ and propaganda, the
construction of narratives about peace and conflict, etc.

The length limit for each chapter is 7,000-8,000 words inclusive.
Contributors will be asked to submit chapters by November/December
2010. The book will, of course, be subject to the usual peer review
process.

If you are interested in contributing a chapter, please send an
abstract to adamhodges at cmu.edu by July 15.

With best wishes,
Adam
