refusing to support Elsevier

I think Ilana's original email was a call to continue some action that has already started against publishers like Elsevier. Jason Jackson has been blogging and tweeting on this for some months already. So have others. While I am at the bottom of the "line management" pyramid in my institution, I will not stand by and do nothing. When a Routledge editor came around Aberdeen a few years ago and knocked on my office door, I told her that there is no way I would ever publisher with Routledge and I try to avoid requiring their books in my teaching because I think they simply overpriced. I also pointed out that way that Routledge abandoned anthropology and then tried to come back has killed any trust I would have that they would look after anthropology publications. She left my office nonplussed. 

I think that many American university presses do a good job at producing good stuff at reasonable prices, and that is where I published my monograph. The journal I edit (Sibirica) is published by a private publisher (Berghahn), but priced reasonably (about £100pa for institutions) and not necessarily chained to bundles. There are also non-subscription-based access options for Sibirica, mostly connected to one or two-year embargo, but that means that Sibirica back issues are very cheap.

Why not follow Ilana's link and sign the petition and ask your librarian to renegotiate subscription terms?
