deception, indirection, etc

A colleague who works in the Middle East/Arabic and Islamic Studies just asked me for suggestions on the topic of using language to mean two things at once--in codes, or in mental reservations or double-entendres meant to hide what one is actually thinking while appearing to agree with the interlocutor without technically lying. He used a book by Perez Zagorin, an historian, writing about the sixteenth century, called Ways of Lying. I suggested some things on indirection and deception in political language, but what else would you all suggest?

Thanks for suggestions.
