My students have consistently loved Ayala Fader’s Mitzvah Girls, about bringing up Hasidic children in Brooklyn.

I'll jump in here to recommend Perry Gilmore's brand-new Kisisi: Our Language. It's the story of the creation of a pidgin between two five-year old boys, Colin (American) and Sadiki (Samburu) from Kenya, as told through the story of their friendship in the highlands of Kenya.

Dear all,

Since the last request worked so well, I am trying another one. Would people be willing to share their favorite ethnographies dealing explicitly with language socialization? Again, I am thinking about books written within the last five years, as opposed to some of the older classics.

Sincerely,
Elise
