At the intersection of mind and action, Ryerson is on a transformative path
to become Canada’s leading comprehensive innovation university. Integral to
this path is the placement of equity, diversity and inclusion as
fundamental to our institutional culture. Our current academic plan
outlines each as core values and we work to embed them in all that we do.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of
Arts at Ryerson University invites applications for a full-time
tenure-track position, at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1,
2018, subject to final budgetary approval. The area of specialization is
Sociolinguistics, with demonstrated expertise in areas such as
intercultural communication, cultural and linguistic anthropology,
sociolects in contact and culturally-marked communicative practices. The
ideal candidate for this position will have demonstrated expertise and
experience in dealing with intercultural relations and cross-cultural
negotiations and related research methods. Interest and/or experience in
taking on a leadership role in the development of Mandarin courses and
programming is considered an asset.

Responsibilities will include: teaching and supervising at the
undergraduate and graduate levels; contributing to the undergraduate and
graduate programs, including taking a lead role in curriculum
development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a
strong, independent, externally-funded research agenda; and participating
in the academic life of the Department of Languages, Literatures and
Cultures, the Faculty of Arts and the University.

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD (or expect to do so by
July 2018), and will demonstrate an ability to contribute to both our
undergraduate and graduate programs, show evidence of high-quality
teaching, cultivate a strong research profile and an emerging scholarly
record, and manifest a clear capacity for collegial service. Candidates
must have a demonstrated commitment to upholding the values of Equity,
Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and
scholarly, research or creative activities.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (www.ryerson.ca/llc)
has undergone extraordinary growth and diversification over the past three
years, launching an original B.A. in Language and Intercultural Relations,
as well as a new Major in Anthropology in the B.A. in Arts and Contemporary
Studies. These innovative interdisciplinary programs aim at providing
students with the opportunity to deepen their sense of self-awareness in
order to achieve intercultural empathy and cultural competence, so that
they can understand how others see the world differently and then serve as
intercultural mediators in diverse walks of life. While our ambition is to
build our own graduate program in the near future, faculty members are
actively involved in several interdisciplinary graduate programs, including
the M.A. in Immigration and Settlement Studies, the M.A./Ph.D. joint
programs in Communication and Culture, and the Ph.D. in Policy Studies. In
addition to a wide selection of courses taught in English, LLC offers
courses in French, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic.

Ryerson University welcomes those who have demonstrated a commitment to
upholding the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion and will assist us
to expand our capacity for diversity in the broadest sense. In addition, to
correct the conditions of disadvantage in employment in Canada, we
encourage applications from members of groups that have been historically
disadvantaged and marginalized, including First Nations, Metis and Inuit
peoples, Indigenous peoples of North America, racialized persons, persons
with disabilities, and those who identify as women and/or 2SLGBTQ+. Please
note that all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however,
applications from Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
