Language Use without Proficiency: Language Ideology, Metalinguistic Community and Ethnolinguistic Infusion

Participants: Jesse Harasta [Organizer] (Cazenovia College), Sarah Benor (Hebrew Union College), Netta Aveniri [Discussant] (Middlebury Institute of International Studies)

Proficient use is often considered the ultimate goal of language pedagogy, especially in lesser-used and heritage language contexts. This panel will examine alternative approaches to language use where proficiency is not the ultimate goal; instead, language is a tool for building community, forging ethnic or religious identity or achieving political and social recognition. Participants will draw upon a variety of theoretical concepts including Language Ideology, Aveniri’s concept of Metalinguistic Community and Benor’s Ethnolinguistic Infusion.
