Appointed positions:

SLA Section News Co-Editor for Anthropology News

Anthropology News (AN) is the American Anthropological Association’s (AAA) award-wining member magazine, published bimonthly in print and continually on the AN website<https://anthropology-news.org/>. The section column co-editors work together to solicit, provide editorial feedback on, and publish four quarterly columns each year. These include timely news about goings-on in a section, essays (magazine-style anthropology stories), photo essays, and interviews grounded in interesting research, current events, or debates within the discipline related to the section’s area of expertise. Section editors review pitches from section members to determine if they are a good fit for Anthropology News. They then provide developmental feedback, recommendations for revision (structure, clarity of argument, style), and copy edits during the editorial process. Section editors are responsible for submitting final pieces and working with AN’s Chief Editor and Publishing Assistant to finalize publication. Published pieces are promoted via the Anthropology News Twitter account, AAA social media, and email. As members of the SLA extended board, SLA Anthropology News Editors receive an annual stipend of $300 toward attending the AAA annual meeting.

Digital Media Director (January 2023)

The SLA Digital Media Director is responsible for updating the SLA website, sending out periodic announcements on the SLA listserv, archiving announcements/news on the SLA website, and helping JLA editors with media content as needed. In addition to working closely with the SLA Digital Assistant to expand the SLA’s social media presence, the SLA Digital Media Director recruits content writers for the SLA blog—working with content authors, co-editing blog posts, adding finished posts to the SLA website, and advertising new posts to SLA membership. As a member of the SLA extended board, the SLA Digital Media Director receives an annual stipend of $300 toward attending the AAA annual meeting.

SLA Program Committee Members (January 2023)

Program Committee members work closely with the Section Program Editor to build the program for the Society of Linguistic Anthropology’s contribution to the AAA Annual meetings. Primary duties include: reviewing SLA panels and abstracts for AAA 2024 program; assisting with organizing special events for AAA 2024; connecting with other extended board members to foster virtual events, connections, and community for SLA members throughout the year. This is an excellent position for SLA members interested in fostering, overseeing, and supporting cutting edge research in the field. Currently seeking 4-5 members, one of whom is a graduate student representative. Interested parties please feel free to contact snarayanan at unr.edu<mailto:snarayanan at unr.edu>.
