Department of Anthropology (<u>http://anthro.ucsd.edu</u>) invites
applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship starting July
1, 2004. We seek an assistant professor
specializing in the anthropology of immigration, citizenship, language
diversity, linguistic practices, education, or health issues as they
affect the immigrant, border, minority, or indigenous communities
represented in California. The position is part of a
university-wide initiative called California Cultures in Comparative
Perspective. The new appointee will collaborate with members of
the Department of Anthropology, as well as with others involved in the
university initiative, to create a cluster of faculty focused on the
social and cultural dimensions of California's recent demographic,
political, and economic transformations. The Department of
Anthropology seeks a candidate whose work focuses on social practices
and institutions, ethnographic fieldwork, and comparative theoretical
analysis. Of particular interest to the Department are
candidates who have conducted research in the United States<i> and</i>
in communities of origin for California immigration, especially
regions of Mexico, Central America, the U.S.-Mexico border, and Asia.
Candidates should also indicate if they have on-going research in
California and/or one of these regions that could provide
opportunities for student involvement.<br>

Applicants should have a strong record of ethnographic research.
Ph.D. must be completed by September 1, 2004. Candidates must
demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in research and
teaching. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, and
based on UC pay scales. To assure consideration, send cover
