graduate students.
This competition is open to all citizens and permanent residents
of the United States who anticipate completion of their Ph.D. by July
1, 2005. However, UC students are strongly encouraged to apply.
In 2001, 44% of the award recipients were from UC schools; 75% in
2002; and 50% in 2003 (2004 numbers have not been released yet).
In addition, in order to be more competitive, the applicant should
seek a faculty sponsor/mentor from a campus other than where they
received their Ph.D.
President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Call for
Applications

THE PROGRAM The University of California President's Postdoctoral
Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding
women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the
University of California. The current President's Postdoctoral
Fellowship Program offers postdoctoral research fellowships and
faculty mentoring to qualified scholars committed to university
careers in research, teaching, and service that will enhance the
diversity of the academic community at the University of
California.

For fellowships in the Humanities, Arts, Social Science, Professions
and other relevant fields, the program prefers candidates whose
research emphasizes issues such as diversity, multi-culturalism and
communities underserved by traditional academic research. For
fellowships in Mathematics, Engineering, Life Science and Physical
Science, the program prefers candidates who intend to incorporate
outreach or mentoring activities into their work that will promote
educational opportunities for underrepresented students in higher
education.

AWARDS AND APPOINTMENTS Fellowships are awarded for research
conducted under faculty sponsorship on any one of the University of
California's ten campuses. The University awards 15-20 postdoctoral
fellowships every year. Awards include a stipend of $33,800-$35,300,
which will increase upon renewal, health, vision and dental benefits
and up to $4,000 for research-related expenses. For awards in
Mathematics, Engineering and the Physical Sciences, the stipend will
range from $35,300-$44,000 depending upon experience. Each award is
for a 12-month period, renewable for one year only upon demonstration
of academic productivity and participation in the Annual Fall Meeting
and the Academic Spring Retreat.

ELIGIBILITY Fellowships are awarded through competitions open
to citizens and permanent residents of the United States.
Applications from qualified persons are accepted and reviewed without
regard to race, gender, or ethnicity. Only those who anticipate
completion of their Ph.D. degrees by July 1, 2005 should apply.
