<p class="MsoNormal">It is with a heavy heart that I pass on the news of the
death of our colleague and friend, Bernard Bate. He died peacefully in his sleep in his
apartment in Menlo Park, California at the age of 55. He leaves behind a legacy of fine
scholarship, warm friendships, and many echoes of his boundless enthusiasm and
curiosity. Links to his Facebook page, where
friends from all walks of life have paid tribute and posted pictures, and two
obituaries are below.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p><p class="MsoNormal">all best to all of you, Leila</p>
