<p class="MsoNormal">• the most successful white supremacist/nationalist/separatist leaders have been well-educated.
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• hate groups and their leaders inspire hate activity by “lone wolves”</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• most hate crimes (crimes with bias motivations) are perpetrated by “lone wolves”</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• in hate crime or bias activity legislation, the words “actual or perceived” are included so that an individual does not have to have a characteristic of a protected status in order to be a victim of a hate crime (one doesn’t have to be
a lesbian woman to be the victim of anti-lesbian hate). </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• similarly, pretty much all people are protected by theses statuses; hate crimes statutes aren’t special protections for certain groups of people. For example, if a person is attacked because of their actual or perceived status as a straight
woman and the state identifies sexual orientation as protected, then the argument can be made for a hate crime.

<p class="MsoNormal">• the internet.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Regarding language:</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Silence is a big deal. Censorship and self-censorship should be critically examined.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Narrative is a big deal. Individuals who get into and out of organized hate tend to re-narrate their lives, with specific moments being critical to these decisions. Narrative should be critically examined.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Finally:</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Keep connected. There is evidence that those in organized hate, or those who may consider becoming hate activists, can be drawn away from the movement by someone with whom they have empathy. This could be a family member, an educator,
a neighbor… you.</p>
