The conference focuses on the ‘middle period’ of Silverstein’s career (roughly 1990-2005) – specifically, his innovative work on interactional and denotational textuality, the poetic function, and his elaboration of an understanding of
culture as the projected context of social action.

The conference is the second of three planned events to commemorate and carry forth the path-breaking scholarship of our dear departed colleague. The first, held at Harvard University in the spring of this year, focused on the early period
of Silverstein’s career. The third, focusing on the last 15 years of his career, will be held at the University of Chicago in the spring of 2024.
