including documentation and revitalization programs, has been embraced and
established in higher education, the different but related field of endangered
and emerging minority scripts has not.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;line-height:115%;font-size:12pt;font-family:Palatino"><b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11pt;line-height:115%">Of the more than 300 writing systems currently in
use, more than 85% are to varying degrees threatened.</span></b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11pt;line-height:115%">
Many of these culture-specific scripts have been poorly documented, and on the
macro scale the significant questions about script loss (causes, effects,
criteria for degree of threat) remain not only unanswered but largely unasked.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;line-height:115%;font-size:12pt;font-family:Palatino"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11pt;line-height:115%">In this one-hour presentation, suitable for
undergraduate students of all levels, Tim Brookes, founder of the Endangered
Alphabets Project and author of <i>Endangered Alphabets, An Atlas of Endangered
Alphabets </i>and <i>Writing Beyond Writing,</i> will introduce the subject of
minority and emerging scripts with examples from around the world. </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;line-height:115%;font-size:12pt;font-family:Palatino"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11pt;line-height:115%">He will explain the profound importance to a
marginalized community of having its own script and discuss current threats,
revitalization efforts, and the role of digitization.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;line-height:115%;font-size:12pt;font-family:Palatino"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11pt;line-height:115%">Tim Brookes has lectured on endangered alphabets at
Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, the Smithsonian Institution and the Library
of Congress, among many other venues.</span></p>
