Dear LINGLITE Subscribers,
In our second special fund drive issue to you, we can happily report
that we have only $2,000 more to raise to meet our goal. Thanks to
the generosity of everyone listed at the end of this issue, we have
raised $46,000 so far.
Wouldn't you like to see yourself added to this list? Our student
editors certainly would, for they are who you will be supporting with
your donation. Please help us meet our target so that we can keep the
same number of editors in the coming year.
(By the way, if you want to know another reason to donate to LINGUIST
List, make sure you follow the link to the regular fund drive issue in
Monday night's LINGLITE. There you can find out how you can win in
Cascadilla Press's prize draw!)
Combining the number of subscribers to LINGUIST and LINGLITE, we now
have close to 16,000 subscribers. This means that we are only asking
for the equivalent of $3 per subscriber. But how much is a
subscription worth? Read this message below, kindly written for us by
Baden Hughes:
How much is a subscription to The Linguist List worth ?
Most comparable web sites with membership programs charge upwards of
$50 per year to access the same depth, breadth and quality of
information that the Linguist List provides for free. I'm sure a lot
of us pay for these services, and use them far less often than we do
The Linguist List (I know I do, that's for sure).
Thinking about it, if The Linguist List had to commercially provide
its services, you can be sure the operating cost would be more than
the $48,000 pa that's currently required. An estimate of several
hundred thousand dollars would probably be closer to the mark - the
real commercial costs of The Linguist List would onlt start with web
hosting, web site development, programming, and editorial staff. This
alone would raise the cost of a subscription from "free" to a
significant amount.
So, how much is an annual subscription to The Linguist List worth ?
It's probably a debatable point.
Certainly it's worth donating to the annual fund drive, which allows
the folks at The Linguist List to provide these resources for free to
the wider linguistic community.
