Dear Subscribers,

Welcome back to the second week of Fun dDrive Friday!

As you may have noticed last weekend, every Friday during our annual
fund drive, we temporarily alter the home page to showcase the new fun
features we create to help encourage your donations.

This Friday, be sure not to miss the Linguist of the Day, a popular
Fund Drive feature since 2006! This Friday will be a personal
biography from Noam Chomsky.

Subject: A Message from Advisor Dr. Ahmad Lotfi

**The LINGUIST List Advisory Board comprises 31 highly qualified
linguists diverse in both location and linguistic specialty. We are
very grateful for their thoughtful advice and assistance over the
years--LINGUIST wouldn't be the same without them!

     http://linguistlist.org/advisors.cfm

Please continue reading for a message from Dr. Ahmad R. Lotfi, one of
our advisors.**

Dear LL readers,

Do you know a linguist who's ever made his or her pile out of
linguistics? I don't. We linguists seem to be doomed to die poor: no
businessman, industrialist or government has ever found a way to
become fabulously wealthy or powerful with our help. Should I put :)
or :( here? Difficult to say.

And not all non-linguists who've made a lot of money are more
intelligent than the average linguist. Don't believe it? Standardized
IQ tests are there just to check this.

Doing linguistics is not the easiest way to make a living either, is it?

Then why are we here? Why did we decide to become linguists?

I'll tell you why:

				WE LOVED TO!!

And why are you reading this message right now if LINGUIST offered you
no help in doing linguistics? You haven't subscribed to it for fun,
have you? Never! You won't find much here, for sure.

Then donate to LINGUIST in the name of love.

We are all in debt to it for the free service we receive. But more
importantly, we feel morally obliged because of the decision (our own
decision made freely and wisely) to become linguists. Let's remember
it whenever we sign in.

Regards,

Ahmad R. Lotfi

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $55,000. This money will go
to help keep the List running by supporting all of our Student Editors
for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our
Fund Drive 2007 LINGUIST List Superhero Adventure for some Fund Drive
fun!

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on
how to donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your
employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that
doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an
extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates
such a program.

Note: the donors' names are appended to every fund drive message sent
to the main list. You can also see the list of all donors by clicking
here:

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
