Subject: The LINGUIST Advisors' Challenge Has Begun!

Dear Colleagues,

This is the third year of the Advisors' Challenge. For the last two
years, I have written to all of you, calling attention to the fact
that some 30 LINGUIST List Advisors, or a mere 1/10 of 1% of all the
LINGUIST List subscribers, contribute several thousand dollars (this
year we are at $42139) each year. And, as we do every year, the
LINGUIST List Advisors now challenge you! My problem this year is
that the very talented students and staff who make LINGUIST run have
swiped my oh so clever point about the percentages. Now what do I do?
They've stolen my thunder!! It does not make the point any less true,
though, that the few are, in this sense, supporting the many.

Of course we understand that not all of you are professors at high
paying universities (how many of us are, after all?), but if all of us
don't support LINGUISTLIST, there could be fewer of us earning any
money at all as linguists! Consider what we get from the list: not
just information about jobs and grants (though those are important
pieces of information), but also support for research, like tracking
down references, tracing links to data and to theories, and most
broadly, defining the field we all belong to. The theme this year is
the circus. All circuses also must come to an end and we are supposed
to leave the big top feeling refreshed and exhilarated. The only way
we can feel refreshed by this circus is to contribute - our
refreshment comes from knowing that LINGUIST List will continue - and
it cannot without many more contributions. The exhilaration comes
from surpassing last year's target. So, my conclusion:

The Advisors group challenges the rest of you (remember we are only 30
strong) to match our contribution of $2500 and multiply our amount by
4-fold within the next 48 hours.

With best wishes from the LINGUIST List Advisors and thanks in advance,

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your
employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that
doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an
extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates
such a program.

Note: the donors' names are appended to every fund drive message sent
to the main list. You can also see the list of all donors by clicking

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
