Subject: If Only 600 of Our Subscribers Donated $50 We Would End FD Now!

Dear LINGUIST Subscribers,

As you have noticed, we are running our annual Fund Drive again. We
had hoped to end the Fund Drive in 4 weeks, as we have in the past.
But we are at the 3-week mark right now, and we have yet to raise 50%
of our goal. Now we know readers are always anxious to see Fund Drive
end and things return to normal. We feel the same way! But to do
that, we need to make an earnest plea for you to donate NOW.

Perhaps some of you might find these statistics informative:

LINGUIST List Subscribers: 26,419
Number of donors as of 26 March: 391
Percentage of subscribers who have donated so far: under 1.5%!

Here's some more interesting information: if only 600 of our 26,419
subscribers donated $50 we could end Fund Drive! That is less that
2.5% of subscribers letting us know through their donations that they
find LINGUIST useful.

Of course, some linguists can not afford to make a $50 donation. And
we sincerely appreciate donations of any amount. They make us feel
that you value the hard work we do all year round to create and
maintain a website full of up-to-date linguistic information and
reliable services for the discipline.

Throughout its seventeen-year history, all LINGUIST services have been
offered to the discipline completely free of charge. But, as most of
you realize, a site like LINGUIST can not be maintained without
significant funding. Thus we are asking those of you with the means
to do so to donate now, so that LINGUIST can remain free.

If 600 of those generous linguists will step up now and click on
'Donate,' the LINGUIST crew will certainly thank you--but so will many
other linguists and linguistics students who rely on LINGUIST but do
not have the wherewithal to support it.

(Can there really be 25,800 of those??)

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your
employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that
doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an
extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates
such a program.

Note: the donors' names are appended to every fund drive message sent
to the main list. You can also see the list of all donors by clicking

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
