In addition to reporting on aspects of the grammar, history, and social
situation of several Himalayan languages, this year's Himalayan Languages
Symposium has an addition goal: to bring together Himalayanists and
typologists for purposes of analysing the structure of these languages in
a typological context. We would like to see Himalayan studies
enriched with a typological perspective and language typology in
turn benefiting from Himalayan facts not yet recognized or highlighted in
typological studies.

To achieve this goal, three typologists - Matthew Dryer, David Gil, and
Ian Maddieson - have been invited to offer 90-minute
typologically-oriented workshops on topics yet to be announced. These
workshops will take place at the end of each of the three
days of conference. We hope other typologist colleagues will also choose
to attend.

The symposium will be held June 15-17 2000 at the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The program was posted on LINGTYP yesterday. For
further information, e-mail noonan at uwm.edu or edith at uwm.edu
