To the question posted by Edith Moravcsik : could it be that the reason
English does not have "how many-eth" is that "how many"  is two words and
it is strange to use a derviational affix on
a two-word  base?

It is unlikely that having two words would affect the derivation, since the
original german expression was  a two-word interrogative pronoum: wie viel
