Dear All,

below you will find information on a Summer School (2 weeks) to be held
at Bamberg in July 2014, particularly aimed at graduate students and PhD's.

We very much regret the clash of dates with the Stockholm Summer School
on language documentation, but we could not change our dates at short
notice.
Note, however, that this one is not a training course in language
documentation, but is primarily intended for people who have already
compiled data from a documentation setting, and are interested in
methodological approaches to variation.

Best wishes for the Christmas break, and for the New Year!

Geoff

*Background and Aims*
Documentary linguistics is faced with a steadily increasing flow of
language data on a rich cross-section of typologically varied and
generally under-described languages. And increasingly, language
documenters need to find methodologies and techniques for dealing with
the language-internal variation inevitably present in their data.
Documentary linguists are currently exploring methodologies for
annotating and mining larger corpora, but they do not always have the
necessary background to enable them to best make sense out of variant
data. This summer school intends to bring specialists from documentary
linguistics together with variationist sociolinguists with the intention
of opening up avenues for a fruitful exchange.

Set in the beautiful medieval city of Bamberg in Bavaria, the summer
school will offer a series of seminars and workshops, where participants
receive state of the art tuition and also have an opportunity to work on
their own topics under supervision of experienced instructors. Alongside
more general lectures and seminars, students will choose one of three
regional workshops offering in-depth coverage of specific regions and
linguistic phenomena:

(i) Oceania; (ii) East Anatolia and neighbouring regions; (iii)
Phonological variation in World Englishes.

Formal registration will be available from February 1st. The number of
places available is restricted, and acceptance will be on a
first-come-first-served basis.

There will be a course fee of 250 Euros which covers all refreshments
and course materials; courses are creditable on the ECTS-system
(master's level).
