*APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE FOR CROSS-LISTING*

Dear all,

We are happy to announce an intensive 2-week Winter School on “Language
Documentation and Linguistic Fieldwork: Theory Meets Practice” to take
place at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in February 2016.

The first week (February 7-11) is designed to provide a comprehensive and
up-to-date introduction to the methodology of linguistic fieldwork and
language documentation. Classes by invited lecturers will address the
following topics:

1. Data management for language documentation (Jeff Good, University of
Buffalo)

2. Working with a speaker (Sebastian Fedden, University of Sydney)

3. Phonetics and phonology in the field (Heriberto Avelino, UC Berkeley)

4. Challenges and methods in syntactic fieldwork (Heather Bliss, University
of Victoria)

Classes will meet daily throughout the week. Detailed descriptions of each
class can be found here:
http://shnaton.huji.ac.il/index.php/NewSyl/10904/2/2016/

The second week is an optional “practicum” (February 14-18). Students will
design and carry out independent linguistic fieldwork on a language of
their choice, in any sub-field of linguistics (as approved in advance by
the course coordinators). Guidance in conducting the study will be provided
by a faculty member specializing in the language of choice. In addition to
meeting for consultation sessions with a native speaker and analyzing the
collected data, students will participate in lectures on linguistic
fieldwork in Israel and take part in off-campus activities showcasing
language documentation and revitalization currently underway in the country.
