I know what you mean, Bernhard. Like this feeling of sudden enlightenment I felt when I saw the name Θερβάντες in a window of a bookshop in Athens.

The president’s note very much reminds me of an obituary by Gerhard Bähr explaining to the Basque world, in Basque, how Schuchardt’s name should be pronounced properly, namely Xujart, in Basque orthography (see the attached copy).

Long live typology !
But don’t worry - Xujart was never president of any scholarly society. And his name keeps being pronounced horribly in the Romance world.

Bernhard

The note is just for those typologists who still know whom I am talking about.

Dear ALT members,

72 ALT members have cast their votes, and Maria Koptjevskaja Tamm of Stockholm University has been elected as the next Editor of Linguistic Typology.

We welcome the incoming Editor, and we thank Frans Plank both for his continuing service as Editor of Linguistic Typology through the end of this year and for his extraordinary dedication to the journal over more than two decades.

In order to assist with future correspondence about LT, it may be worthwhile for everyone to have some information about the new Editor’s name. Officially, she is “Maria Koptjevskaja Tamm” (without a hyphen). However, she publishes with her last two names hyphenated, i.e., as “Koptjevskaja-Tamm”. Also, many people know her as “Masha” rather than “Maria”.

The most difficult part about her name, for many people, is the pronunciation. The name “Koptjevskaja” is the Swedish transliteration of her Russian family name, while “Tamm” is the name of her Swedish husband. For those who can read it, the Russian spelling is “Мария Копчевская Тамм”. The IPA for her name is: [maˈriːa kɔpˈt͡ʃɛfskaja ˈtam].

Hopefully, this description will help us all refer to her properly!

With best wishes,
Jeff Good (President)
Kristine Hildebrandt (Secretary)
Dmitry Idiatov (Treasurer)
