Dear all,

In September 2018, Johan van der Auwera retired from the University of Antwerp (Belgium). It goes without saying that he was and continues to be a prominent figure in the field of linguistic typology, known for his research into modality and negation among other things. Johan van der Auwera was also actively involved in the typology community: he was one of the co-founders of the Association of Linguistic Typology, served as its secretary-treasurer from 1995 to 2007 and played an important role in the journal Linguistic Typology from 1995 to 1999. Thanks for his service and congratulations on his retirement are clearly in order!

Two of Johan van der Auwera's direct colleagues and one of his students have collected a number of papers written in his honor. The volume centers around linguistic variation in the broadest sense of the term and includes contributions by many friends and colleagues of Johan van der Auwera. It was presented to him in November and has now been published in open access by De Gruyter. To see the papers, as well as a few words about Johan’s life and work, one can follow this link: https://www.degruyter.com/viewbooktoc/product/506391 .

Best regards,
Maria (Masha) Koptjevskaja Tamm
