Another historical note on Heath 1975: perhaps the only modern theoretical linguistics article written entirely in the field, and without any references – and published in Language!

Hi Maïa,
For completeness’ sake, you should include the follow great early article, in 1975 arguing for a functionalist/explanatory account of the form of pronouns and pronominalization, including “null” subjects like in “Equi-NP deletion":

Heath, Jeffrey. 1975. Functional relationships in grammar. Language 51.1: 89-104.

Historical note: This article was influential in the development of Role and Reference Grammar.

Dear all,

Following my request for references on "pro-drop" I have received a number of very useful recommendations. Many thanks for your numerous ad detailed responses on this.
It is trully awesome to be able to rely on such a generous and knowledgeable community.

For future reference, here is a file with the references in question.
(I hope I haven't forgotten any.)

Many thanks, cheers,
Maïa
