PhD position, corpus and field research on Warlpiri (Pama-Nyungan)

Applications are invited to fill a PhD position in the research group 
“Non-hierarchicality in grammar. Construction for-mation without word 
class distinction across categories and languages” (Emmy Noether Group, 
DFG (German Research Foundation)) led by PI Dr. Uta Reinöhl at the 
Department of English and Linguistics of the University of Mainz (Germa-ny).

The PhD candidate will work on the language Warlpiri (Pama-Nyungan, 
Australia). S/he will assist in making an existing corpus more tractable 
as well as conduct short field trips for answering targeted research 
questions. S/he will collaborate with the principal investigator and 
Prof. Jane Simpson (Australian National University) in studying complex 
nominal ex-pressions in Warlpiri. S/he will conduct collaborative 
research together with other PhD candidates and the principal 
inves-tigator on complex expressions combining elements of the same 
syntactic class, cross-linguistically and cross-categorially.

This PhD project is planned as a Cotutelle programme with dual enrolment 
at the University of Mainz and at the Australi-an National University 
(Canberra). The candidate will be employed at Mainz with regular visits 
to ANU.

The ideal candidate has:
-    an MA degree (or an equivalent degree such as a BA (Hon) that 
allows for entering a doctoral programme) in linguistics or related 
fields by the end of February 2019
-    research interests in one or more of the following sub-disciplines: 
typology, language documentation, syntax, in-formation structure, 
Australian languages
-    a keen interest in working on an indigenous Australian language
-    a keen interest in conducting corpus-based linguistics as well as 
field trips
-    social skills required for collaborative research with native 
speakers as well as within the research unit

Funding: E13 TV-L (65%) – Three years (with a possible extension to four 
years)
