font-family:Arial'>The TDS provides an online integrated interface to multiple
independently developed typological databases. Currently 9 databases** in the
fields of phonology and syntax are accessible through the system, and their
number and the topics covered will increase in the near future. Through
intelligent unified querying of these databases the system allows the
combination of parameters across the boundaries of individual databases, thus
increasing considerably the joint value of the information collected by
individual researchers or research groups. The TDS system is made available
free of charge to the linguistic community at large. Apart from its obvious
research applications, it is a useful educational tool for courses in the field
of linguistic typology. We cordially invite you to explore the system and
welcome any comments you might have.

font-family:Arial'>While you are visiting the TDS website, you may just as well
have a look at the downloadable IPA console that was developed as a side
product of the TDS system. The IPA console is an on-screen keyboard for typing
characters and diacritics in the International Phonetic Alphabet using the
layout of the familiar IPA tables. The console is a Java WebStart application
which allows you to easily copy and paste strings of IPA symbols in Unicode. It
can also be used to import legacy IPA text from the SIL IPA and IPA 93
encodings. Again we would be happy to receive your comments.
