review of the contribution of modern Linguistics to our knowledge of Latin and
Ancient Greek, and likewise, the contribution of classical language studies to

enjoys a long tradition. Over the last few decades, the boundaries of research
have broadened, developing from the investigation of an individual language
family towards a comparison with genetically and areally unrelated languages.
Accordingly, a re-classification of certain Ancient Greek and Latin phenomena
has occurred, as well as the identification of possible universal and
language-specific trends. Apart from cross-linguistic studies, important
attempts have been made at interpreting classical language phenomena within
wider theoretical frameworks, regarding both functional and formal
approaches.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></SPAN></P>
