This language is Shua, a Khoe-K</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#000000;">w</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#191919" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#191919;">adi language (</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#000000;">a so-called "click language"</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#191919" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#191919;">) spoken in Botswana. The course is not geared towards conversational competence in that language, but in providing insights</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#000000"
style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#000000;"> into its structure and usage</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#191919" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#191919;">. T</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#000000;">he t</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#191919" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#191919;">eacher Bill McGregor has extensive fieldwork experience in Australia and Africa. </font></div>
<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#191919" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#191919;">In the second week, students will learn theoretical, ethical, methodological and ethnographic aspects of linguistic fieldwork. Students</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#000000;"> will</font><font face="Verdana" size="+0" color="#191919" style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:12pt;color:#191919;"> learn how to analyze the structure of an unknown language. Classes also involve practical sessions with a speaker of an unfamiliar language. Required pre-course readings will be
