A friend has asked me to recommend a good basic introduction to linguistics. It's nearly 20 years since I taught any intro courses and I haven't kept up with the relevant literature. I'd like to suggest to her something that covers most subfields and with no

 particular theoretical slant. What would colleagues recommend? Advice gratefully received.</div>
