<div>Dear typologists,</div><div> </div><div>sad news have arrived from Saint-Petersburg: Emma Geniušienė, an eminent typologist, died on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at the age of 88.</div><div>Emma Geniušienė is best known for her classic book "The Typology of Reflexives" (Mouton de Gruyter, 1987), which became a pinnacle work in the cross-linguistic study of voice-related phenomena. Less wide-known but no less important are her groundbreaking works of the grammar of Lithuanian, in particular, her 1973 PhD thesis "Passive constructions in Lithuanian", published in English as part of the volume "Passive Constructions in Lithuanian. Selected Works by Emma Geniušienė" (Ed. by Anna Kibort & Nijolė Maskaliūnienė, transl. by Artūras Ratkus. John Benjamins, 2016), in which she had anticipated many future developments in the field, including quantitative corpus work before the age of electronic corpora and a discourse-based approach to the functions of voice. Last but not the least, Emma Geniušienė made a huge contribution as translator and editor to a large number of works, ranging from the "Lithuanian Grammar" (ed. by Vytautas Ambrazas, Vilnius, 2006) to "A Syntax of the Nivkh Language. The Amur Dialect" by Vladimir Nedjalkov & Galina Otaina (John Benjamins, 2013).</div><div><div>Emma Geniušienė will be remembered as a devoted scholar and a modest and gentle person who tended to remain in the background, but whose contributions have greatly impacted the fields of typology and Baltic linguistics and will surely still be read and appreciated in the future.</div><div>R.I.P.</div></div><div> </div><div>-- </div><div>Peter Arkadiev, PhD Habil.</div><div>https://peterarkadiev.github.io/</div><div> </div>
