DGfS/CL 95: INTEGRATIVE APPROACHES IN COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS

Invited speakers:
Paul Smolensky (University of Colorado/Johns Hopkins University)
Hans Uszkoreit (Universitaet des Saarlandes)

In view of the increasing complexity of computional linguistic systems and
models, the question as to how various parts can be integrated is becoming
more urgent. The entire spectrum from speech signals to semantics is
affected by this problem. Various strategies are employed in attempts at
solutions, such as the explicit definition of interfaces or avoidance of
the latter through integration.

The conference theme encompasses a range of aspects:
 - the integration of grammatical components or levels
 - the integration of various types of information (e.g. subsymbolic
an
d symbolic, propositional and pictorial, statistical and nonstatistical
information)
 - the separation of grammar and lexicon versus the trend toward
   lexicalization as an integrative perspective.

Contributions to this theme are requested that describe theoretical
proposals or practical systems. Contributions of particular significance
that deviate from the main theme can also be considered for acceptance.
