To participate in research and teaching in both the
undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the Department.
Specialisations can include any field within linguistics and
wider cognitive domains:  syntax, semantics, pragmatics,
psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, cognitive grammar,
computational linguistics, etc.  A research interest in the
languages of the Asian, Australasian, or Pacific area is
desirable.  A PhD is required.  Preference will be given to
applicants with substantial publications.  Membership of a
University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of
employment for new appointees.
 
The department is an active, medium-sized department with strong
interests in general and applied linguistics.  Meaning-based,
formal and sociolinguistic approaches to language description
are interests of the Department, as well as fieldwork in the
languages of Asia, Australia and the Pacific.  The University
attracts excellent local and overseas students, and the
Department has many postgraduate students.  A strong research
atmosphere is encouraged and opportunities for interdisciplinary
work also exist with colleagues in communication disorders,
education, law, computer science, anthropology, electrical
engineering, Asian and European languages and Aboriginal
Studies.

The CKIP group is a on-going long-term research project on
Chinese computational linguistics.  The project started in 1986
and has already built an electronic lexicon, a parser, a
classical Chinese corpus, and a Modern Mandarin corpus. The
project is funded  by Academia Sinica (Institute of Information
Science and Institute of History and Philology)  as well as
outside agencies (such as the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation and the
National Science Council of R.O.C.).  We are now inviting
candidates to compete for post-doctoral fellowships from Academia
Sinica. Successful candidates must be affiliated with one of the
research projects listed above. Both previous post-doctoral
fellows with CKIP now hold tenure-track positions with national
universities in Taiwan.

The College of Arts and Sciences at Northeastern University seeks
an innovative and dynamic CHAIRPERSON for the Department of
Modern Languages.
 
The Chairperson will be responsible for using new resources to
facilitate major enhancements in modern language instruction.
The Chairperson is also expected to participate in an
institutional commitment to inter-disciplinary programs and the
internationalization of the University-wide curriculum.  The
Department is committed to developing language instruction
with new technological and pedagogical techniques.
 
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, and
hold a minimum rank of associate professor with tenure.
Candidates must also have near-native fluency in at least one
language in addition to English, and have strong records in
undergraduate teaching and scholarship.  Candidates with
significant accomplishments in establishing successful
innovative programs in language instruction and in securing
grants are especially encouraged to apply.  The successful
candidate will be expected to possess the strong interpersonal
skills necessary to foster a collegial and participatory
environment in the Department, and to be an effective advocate
for the interests of the Department in the University.
