SEMANTICS

Huck and Goldsmith, IDEOLOGY AND LINGUISTIC THEORY
Noam Chomsky and the Deep Structure Debates
A reappraisal of the"schism'' between Chomsky and his students
concerning the role of meaning in grammar. Arguing that the triumph of
Chomsky's interpretive semantics had less to do with the fact that it
was right than with the fact that the contrary argument for generative
semantics failed to establish an institutional base, the authors
reveal similarities between the two models, and demonstrate the extent
to which Chomsky's paradigm drew from the concepts employed by his
estranged students. The text is further supplemented by interviews
with Ray Jackendoff, George Lakoff, Paul M. Postal and John Robert
Ross. History of Linguistic Thought series.

     Hudson, WORD MEANING
This introduction to the basic terminology and principles associated
with semantic analysis is based on a problem-solving approach to
language. It demonstrates how to apply these terms and principles to
English and includes suggestions for further work. Language Workbooks

DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

     Salkie, TEXT AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS
This guide to the issues and methods associated with text and
discourse analysis looks at a range of devices such as lexical
cohesion, substitution and theuse of reference items. Salkie concludes
by looking at larger patterns in texts--including news stories,
advertisements, novels, official forms, instruction manuals and
textbooks--and provides a guide for further reading. Language

SOCIOLINGUISTICS

     Cameron, VERBAL HYGIENE
Using specific examples of practised verbal hygiene which include the
regulation of style by editors; the teaching of English grammar in
schools; and the movements for and against so-called politically
correct language, Cameron examines the practices through which people
try to both clean up language and regulate its use in attempts to make
it functionally, aesthetically and morally "better". Politics of
     Language series.

STYLISTICS

     Mills, FEMINIST STYLISTICS
Combining literary and linguistic theory, Mills provides a rationale
for the interrogation of texts from a feminist perspective. Through an
examination of both literary and non-literary texts, including pop
songs, newspaper advertisements, jokes and pulp fiction, Mills
examines such issues as sexism, political correctness, agency and
meaning to provide readers with a tool-kit which exposes the gender
bias of both canonical and popular texts. Interface series.

     Haynes, STYLE
This introduction to the analysis of stylistics helps the student:
     develop an interest and a sensitivity to words and structures;
recognize contrasts within and between texts; and heighten awareness
with regard to word choice, meaning and stylistic convention. Language
     Workbooks series.
