POSITION  Full-time researcher (Research in Japanese grammar development
for a Japanese-English machine translation project), from September 1995 to
December 1996.
 
QUALIFICATIONS  M.A. in linguistics, computational linguistics, or other
related disciplines.  Specialization: formal syntax (esp. unification
grammar) and/or formal semantics/natural language processing.  Native or
near native competence in the Japanese language.  Knowledge in German is
not required.

                UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA
 
The University of Hawaii at Manoa invites applications and nominations
for the above position. The University is a comprehensive research
university in a metropolitan area of 850,000 people. Because of its
location in the Pacific, many of its programs place special emphasis on
Asia and the Pacific; faculty are therefore expected to make some
commitment in this direction.
 
The College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature is one of the four
Colleges of Arts and Sciences at the University. It has as its central
focus the study of human language, the ways meaning is created through
language, and the relation of language to human experience. The College
has six academic departments (East Asian Languages and Literatures,
English, English as a Second Language, European Languages and Literature,
Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures, and Linguistics) and
four programs (the Language Telecommunications, Resource and Learning
Center, the Center for Interpretation and Language Studies, the Center
for Biographical Research, and the Manoa Writing Programme, the
campus-wide writing-intensive programme). It is the home of the first
National Foreign Language Resource Center. The academic departments
provide instruction in core requirements, e.g., written communication,
introductory literature, and foreign or Hawaiian lannguages. The range of
languages taught is wide and includes many that are less commonly taught
languages. Each department has its own degree programmes at the
undergraduate and graduate levels, many through the Ph.D.; the College
supports as well a number of certificate programmes. The College is
committed to excellence in undergraduate education and to liberal
education and supports strong graduate programmes and research endeavours.
 
The Dean reports directly to the Senior Vice president, University of
Hawai'i/Executive Vice Chancellor, University of Hawai'i at Manoa and
serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College;
oversees a budget in excess of $13,000,000, with approximately 262 FTE
instructional and research faculty, specialists, and staff; and provides
instruction for approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
 
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. from within the disciplines of languages,
linguistics, and literature; distinguished teaching and research record
at a comprehensive university offering research and graduate programmes
commensurate with appointment at the tenured professor level in one of
the departments in the College; significant administrative experience at
the department chair's level or above with demonstrated ability in
academic leadership; experience in academic planning and evaluation;
experience with academic budgets, personnel issues and grant proposals
and administration; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with academic and administrative constituencies.
 
Desirable Qualifications: Substantial commitment to language teaching and
learning and literary studies; experience with Asian or Pacific languages
and cultures; familiarity with budgets and management in a state
university context.
 
Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience.
