COMPUTATIONAL LOGIC FOR NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING
A Joint COMPULOGNET/ELSNET/EAGLES Workshop
April 3-5, 1995
Edinburgh
Applications to Natural Language Processing have always been one of
the major driving forces for the development of computational
logics. Conversely, techniques devised for computational logics (and
Logic Programming in particular) have often given rise to elegant
solutions for representing and reasoning with linguistic knowledge.
However, there is a danger that questions of common interest to the
two areas are pursued independently and possibilities for cross-
fertilization are ignored.
In Europe, the Esprit Networks ELSNET and COMPULOGNET connect
researchers within the two areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP)
and Computational Logic (CL). The LRE Initiative EAGLES has one
Working Group especially concerned with linguistic formalisms. The
joint workshop of the two networks and EAGLES is intended as a forum
where NLP researchers point out open problems that are likely to
benefit from CL techniques and CL researchers present achievements
that have potential impact on NLP.
The following questions are examples where we think such a
cross-fertilization is possible:
- Can one model phenomena like presupposition and negation in natural
language in a computationally satisfactory way?
- Can non-monotonic systems of logic be adapted for applications of NLP
in areas such as belief modelling, rhetorical relations and
ellipsis?
- What kind of constraint languages are suitable for NL processing?
- Can attributive description logics developed in knowledge representation
be used to enhance the expressivity of grammars?
The workshop will consist of invited talks and presentations of
selected papers on logical processing of NLP and on CL research having
potential NL applications.
Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract (4-5 pages) no later
than February 1, 1995.

The workshop will be held at the Forth Bridges Moat House Hotel located
at South Queensferry in the outskirts of Edinburgh. The Hotel overlooks
the scenic Forth Bridge and is a short drive from Edinburgh airport. The
hotel has good facilities and full board accommodation at special rates
for workshop participants has been arranged.
Submission requirements

Authors are invited to submit by email an extended abstract (4-5 pages)
to reach us no later than 1 February 1994. The title page of the abstract
should contain a 5-7 line summary as well as a list of keywords.
Electronic submissions in plain ascii, self contained LaTeX or postscript
format should be mailed to the following electronic address:

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Belgian Linguistic Association
1995 CONFERENCE ON POLITICAL LINGUISTICS
ANTWERP (Belgium), 7-9 December 1995
This conference aims at convening scholars from a wide range of
disciplines, interested in the intersection of language/discourse and the
political sphere (i.e. politics both in its institutionalized and
everyday dimensions). The general purpose is to explore and deepen ways
of analyzing language as a political instrument, a political theme, and a
political domain. In order to arrive at a coherent agenda, we organize
four sections:
1. LANGUAGE AND IDEOLOGY: The domain of research related to language and
processes of ideological symbolization. This includes the everyday
political dimensions of discourse, folk linguistic ideologies, normative
use of language, and language-based reproduction of ideologies.
2. POLITICAL LANGUAGE: This includes political rhetoric, advertising,
mass-media, propaganda, etc.
3. LANGUAGE AND MINORITIES: This includes the question of societal
multilingualism and linguistic pluralism, language teaching to
minorities, the role of language in minority policies, etc.
4. LANGUAGE AND THE STATE: The domain of research related to language and
state control. This includes language policies and language planning,
language standardization, language in education, language and
nation-building, etc.
We invite proposals for paper presentations (30' + 15' discussion) and/or
for special events such as panels or round table discussions (3 hours).
Note that all proposals should specify the section in which they fit.
ABSTRACTS (2 hard copies) should be sent to the organizers before March
15th, 1995, and should meet the following requirements:
1. PAPERS: 1-page abstracts, giving a clear and sufficient indication of
theme, approach and type(s) of data.
2. SPECIAL EVENTS: a full and detailed proposal fron the convenor(s),
specifying (1) theme, (2) list of participants who have agreed to
contribute, (3) format (discussion, paper presentation...) and (4) short
abstracts of the various contributions.
