Subject: About E.H. Tuttle

I'm looking for information about E. H. Tuttle, a deceased Yale
University professor. He wrote an article in Modern Philology n.4 (1906):
"Galician G".
Who was E. H. Tuttle?
How did he know the Galician Language?
Did he write other articles or books?

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Query: German /tS/ (tsch)

Is German /tS/, as in (tschu"s) and <deutsch>, best regarded as a
single segment or as a sequence? The sources I've consulted are
mostly noncommittal, and the two that do take a position disagree.

I have a student doing an independent major in linguistics who wants to do
a semester abroad (i.e., outside U.S.) in the fall of 1995. She is
especially interested in a university with significant offerings in
sociolinguistics. Any suggestions? Please respond directly to
