Theme:
     The theme of this conference is the application of  advanced
     technologies  and  knowledge  to  the processing of Chinese,
     Japanese, Korean  and  other  oriental  languages.    Recent
     advances  and  developments  in  methodologies,  systems and
     software and hardware will be emphasized.

     Suggested  topics  included  but  are  not  limited  to  the

        Syntactic and semantic analysis
        New input methods and their applications

June 22-24, 1996 at Hong Kong Polytechnic University
 
Organised by the Department of English, Hong Kong Polytechnic
University in association with a programme committee based at
the Department of Languages and Culture, Roskilde University,
Denmark.

* Aims *
On paper, the rights of individuals and groups to learn and
use their own languages and the official languages of the
states they live in are widely recognised. In practice, these
rights are fully exercised only by the native speakers of a
small minority of the world's languages.
 
This conference aims to explore the meaning of language rights
at an international level and in east and southeast Asian
contexts. Relevant areas include
 
  + language rights and human rights
  + linguistic imperialism
  + international languages and global inequalities
  + language and gender
  + literacy and development
  + linguistic minorities
  + bilingual education
  + language and the media
  + language and the law
  + language and ideology
 
Papers are welcome which address any of these areas in terms
of language rights. Papers are especially welcome which
address issues of language rights in east and southeast Asian
contexts.
 
* Submission of abstracts *
 
Abstracts are invited for paper presentations of 40-45
minutes. Please submit one copy to fit on one side of A4 to
include title of paper, name of presenter and affiliation.
 
The main language of the conference will be English. Abstracts
and papers may be in any language. Translation/interpretation
into English will be provided if possible.
 
Abstracts should be sent to Phil Benson at the address at the
end of this page by 1st December, 1995. Abstracts may be sent
by e-mail, but not by fax.
