I am interested in making cross cultural comparisons of the cursing
lexicons of Tourette Syndrome patients.  If you are aware of any such
research or reports, please forward the citations.

I need references on
ACRONYMS
INITIALISMS
ABBREVIATIONS
and hybrid formations of such.
 
I seem to recall an article in a festschrift that I read in the early to
mid 1960s while still in grad school.  I would hope that there are more
recent (defintional) studies of such critters.
 
Any suggested bibliographic items would be much appreciated.  My current
interest is pretty much limited to English.

Subject:  translation problems
 
L.S.,
 
I'm trying to translate the following two sentences (into Dutch):
 
1. the beaver got a Christmas card because she didn't notice the brown paper
   bag at her back door.
 
Besides the literal translation (which doesn't make any sense),
this sentence is supposed to have another meaning, that certainly cannot
be found in any regular dictionary.
So as this sentence obviously has an idiosyncratic connotation,
only known to american and/or english native speakers,
I was wondering if maybe someone would be so kind to provide me
with a paraphrase of this sentence, such that its meaning becomes obvious?
 
 
and
2. one day, in the parking lot of the concert hall, I witnessed a major
   used-501 deal.
 
Maybe someone can tell me what the meaning of the part
"a major used-501 deal" is?
