Dear netters,
I am currently working on a project on the history of translation in Africa
south of the Sahara. I am studying the role and practice of this ancient art
form from precolonial times when translation was mainly practised in an
oral tradition context up till today when it is being practised in its most
modern form in the public service and private enterprises. Please, could anyone
out there help me with references, documents and pertinent information in this
area. I am particularly interested in information regarding Eastern and
Southern Africa, West and Central Africa.

Subject: Case marking of definite NPs only
 
What languages mark direct objects (or other noun cases) only when the
NP is definite (i.e., a proper name or a common noun with the definite
article)?  The two that I know of are Spanish and Hebrew.

Subject:       QUERY: Portuguese
 
Could any Portuguese experts out there please send me suggested
references on any of the following areas: a) a good Portuguese
descriptive grammar b) an introduction to Portuguese linguistics c) a
history of the Portuguese language (I have one reference on this so
far - "From Latin to Portuguese" by Edwin Williams)? In all
cases, I'm interested in both Brazilian and Portuguese varieties.
