THE PARIS SYNTAX AND SEMANTICS CONFERENCE
October 12-14, 1995
The University of Paris 7 and CNRS organize a Syntax and Semantics
Conference. One of the aims of the conference is to promote discussion
between competing theories and formalisms. The meeting will consist of a
general session and a thematic one. Papers are invited for both sessions.
Papers are accepted in English and French.
The thematic session will be dedicated to:

Preliminary Announcement and Call for Papers
2nd WORLD CONGRESS OF AFRICAN LINGUISTICS
Provisionally scheduled for 14-19 July 1997
at the University of Leipzig, Germany

GENERAL REMARKS
Following a decision by the Standing Committee for the Congress of
African Linguistics, the 2nd World Congress of African Linguistics
is provisionally scheduled to take place from the 14th to 19th July
1997 in Leipzig, Germany. The Congress will be hosted by one Europe's
oldest universities (founded in 1409) with exactly 100 years tradition
of research into and teaching of African languages.
The city of Leipzig prides itself not only of its famous university,
but also of 1000 years of recorded history, 500 years of international
commerce and trade fairs (Leipziger Messe), its recognition as Germany's
historical capital of printing and publishing, its international tradition
as a centre of classical music and jazz. And finally: It was here that in
1989 citizens started the 'peaceful revolution' which led to the collapsing
of the former German Democratic Republic.
PAPERS
Papers on all areas relating to African Linguistics will be accepted.
Official congress languages will be English, French and German.
Participants are invited to propose papers (subject to acceptance or
refusal by Committee, presentation time: 20 min.) together with their
provisional registration, providing provisional title and abstract
(maximum: one typewritten page, in the language of presentation), and
indication of the section in which the paper is to be presented.
Provisionally, the following sections of the congress are envisaged:
1. Phonetics and Phonology
2. Morphology
3. Syntax
4. Semantics
5. Pragmatics
6. Discourse Analysis and Aesthetics of Oral Literature
7. Historical Linguistics
8. Sociolinguistics
9. Psycholinguistics
10. Applied linguistics
11. Language and culture
12. Research Projects
13. Other
PROVISIONAL REGISTRATION
The organizers would welcome early provisional registration in order
to facilitate the planning of the congress and seek funding. Only persons
who have registered provisionally can be absolutely sure that the
First Circular containing forms for final registration, details concerning
registration fees, programme and accommodation will be sent to them.
The First Circular is scheduled for December 1995.
DEADLINE for provisional registration is September 30, 1995.
Financial Support for Participants from outside Europe
Participants from outside Europe, particularly from Africa, who need
financial support in order to be able to attend the congress are urged
to send in their detailed request together with their provisional
registration, i.e. before September 30, 1995. A Ways and Means Committee
will be set up which shall engage in fund raising and will also
recommend whom to support in which way.
