Subject: apes & language syllabus

A little while ago I made an offer to send a copy of my syllabus for the
class I am currently teaching called "Apes & Language" to anyone who was
interested. One person warned me, but it was too late: I received so many
requests that I can't possibly send out copies individually, even by email.

Instead, I have arranged to have a copy of the syllabus put on the gopher
for my department (TESL & Applied Linguistics at UCLA). I will also post
an edited version to the list, as a summary/list of references. Both these
things will take some time: the gopher version is being done for me by a busy
person; my posting involves uploading, and I am currently in the end-of-quarter
overload.

I am glad to know there is (still) so much interest in this topic, and I
ask your patience in waiting for the promised information -- it should be
ready in 2 or 3 weeks.

As a followup to my previous post about natural language and DNA,
interested readers should see:

'A note on Zipf's law, natural languages, and noncoding
         DNA regions'
         P. Niyogi & R. C. Berwick (5 Mar 95)
MIT CBCL Memo 118 pp. 14

This paper argues that an empirical fit to Zipf's law is not
evidence of similarity to natural language.

Thanks to Robert Berwick and Paul Hagstrom from bringing this
paper to my attention. The paper is electronically available

The Web Journal of Modern Language Linguistics

...is a new, faster way of publishing your research.

The Web Journal of Modern Language Linguistics (WJMLL) is based in the
School of Modern Languages at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and
will be published initially twice a year by an in-house editorial panel.

Articles will be refereed externally by an Editorial Board of acknowledged
specialists. Research and working papers and reviews of current research
projects will be welcome on any topic of interest to linguists working in
Departments of Modern Languages.

Like the newly-launched Web Journal of Current Legal Issues, WJMLL will be
put on the World Wide Web, a service linked to the massive international
computer network, the Internet. The method of publication will allow
research results and news of current projects to be distributed more
quickly and in more detail than would be possible with a conventional
printed journal.

Current issues of WJMLL will be accessible free of charge to readers on the
Internet and a 'hard copy' version will be published annually.

Requests for further details should be directed to Dr. J. West, Department
of German Studies, University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU
(e-mail: jon.west at ncl.ac.uk).

*** WordNet Version 1.5 is now available ***

WordNet is an online lexical reference system. Word forms in WordNet
are represented in their familiar orthography; word meanings are
represented by synonym sets (synset) - lists of synonymous word forms
that are interchangeable in some context. Two kinds of relations are
recognized: lexical and semantic. Lexical relations hold between word
forms; semantic relations hold between word meanings.

To learn more about WordNet, read "Five Papers on WordNet", available
via anonymous ftp and in printed form. WordNet is available in several
different packages, based on computer platform.

WordNet is available via ftp, or you may use and/or ftp WordNet using
